The City of Turku has selected Louhintahiekka to carry out the street construction contract for the Ferry Terminal Turku project. The contract involves building the street and rail networks in the Turku port area and around Turku Castle, along with renovating municipal infrastructure. Ferry Terminal Turku (FTT) is a joint project between the Port of Turku, the City of Turku, and the cruise lines Tallink Silja and Viking Line, aimed at developing passenger ferry traffic in Turku. The street network is scheduled for completion by autumn 2028.

Louhintahiekka will construct streets and railways and renovate municipal infrastructure to meet the needs of the new passenger terminal area. The project will be carried out under a project management contract model.

“We are building new water supply, wastewater, and stormwater sewer lines, as well as the street network with surface structures. In addition, we are constructing rail connections in the port area,” says Ville Lonka, Project Manager at Louhintahiekka.

The new traffic arrangements will enable the development of the Turku port area and the commissioning of the new shared-use terminal. The renewal is also expected to ease traffic more broadly in Turku, not just near the port. The contract also includes the renovation of streets and municipal infrastructure around Turku Castle.

According to Lonka, Louhintahiekka’s strong experience in target-cost-based project management contracts supports the successful delivery of the project.

“We also have strong expertise in complex street renovation sites and in supported deep excavations. This experience benefits the technical execution of the most challenging parts of the street renovations, as well as the high-quality planning of staged traffic arrangements and schedule management,” he says.

The street contract began in July with a clarification phase, followed by the implementation phase in the autumn. The project will be completed in autumn 2028. Construction work will be carried out in stages to ensure uninterrupted daily operations at the port. The total value of the contract is 25.5 million euros.
