The Port of Turku Streets project includes the construction of a new street network, pedestrian and cycling routes, and landscaped areas. The work is being carried out in a busy urban environment, where construction arrangements affect pedestrians, cyclists and other traffic on a daily basis. Throughout the project, Louhintahiekka has also adapted its site arrangements in response to feedback from local users.
The winner was selected by a multidisciplinary jury representing a broad range of perspectives, including infrastructure, accessibility, business, real estate and cycling, as well as the City of Turku, which commissioned the competition. The jury’s work was coordinated by Ramboll Finland.
The jury commented on the winning project as follows:
“The traffic arrangements were excellently planned and implemented. The work was adapted to the rhythm of city life. Communication was based on genuine dialogue, with practices adjusted in response to discussions. The fencing solutions were excellent and innovative: from heavy-duty barriers to low mesh fencing by the daycare centre, each location had been carefully considered from the user’s perspective to ensure safety.”
The jury’s feedback was also warmly welcomed by the project team.
“The award is a great recognition for our entire team. The port is a demanding operating environment, and succeeding in it requires continuous cooperation and the ability to respond to changing situations. We are particularly pleased that the jury recognised our user-focused approach and the practical solutions implemented in our day-to-day work,” says Ville Lonka, Project Manager at Louhintahiekka.
The Turku Street Construction Site of the Year competition aims to promote safe and smooth mobility for different user groups and minimise the disruption caused by construction. The competition also showcases expertise within the construction industry and highlights good practices that can be applied more widely across the sector.
