The City of Helsinki has selected Louhintahiekka to build quay walls at Melkinlaituri in Jätkäsaari. The project involves the renovation of the Melkinlaituri quay and the construction of a street, water supply infrastructure, a retaining wall, and a support wall. The total value of the contract is 12.1 million euro, and the work will be carried out between June 30, 2025, and June 26, 2026.

The Melkinlaituri quay wall project is technically demanding, as parts of it will be executed in a marine environment and several work phases require specialised expertise.

“Our work includes dredging and filling in the sea, underwater drilling and blasting, demolition of a concrete quay structure, and drilled piling. The marine fill will be done using blasted rock, which will be loaded in Hernesaari and transported to Melkinlaituri by both sea and truck. After demolition, the existing caisson structures of the quay will be reinforced with new cast-in-place shells and edge beams,” explains Louhintahiekka’s Project Manager Aleksi Vipusaari.

“In addition to technical expertise, the success of the project requires high-quality coordination and close cooperation with various stakeholders from our project management. Work phases carried out in the marine area must also consider other operators, such as the Port of Helsinki and cruise ships,” Vipusaari adds.

The Melkinlaituri quay wall project began on June 30, 2025, and is scheduled for completion by June 26, 2026. The total contract value is €12.1 million.

Louhintahiekka has previously completed Phase 4 of the Saukonkanava project in the Jätkäsaari area.
