Louhintahiekka will carry out a 10.7 million euro construction project near Finnoo metro station in Espoo.
The City of Espoo has selected Louhintahiekka to construct Meritien and Meritienaukio in Fnnoo Center. The contract is valued at €10.7 million.
Located in the Kaitaa district of Espoo, Finnoo is a pioneer in sustainable urban development. Construction in the area will continue until the late 2030s, by which time Finnoo is expected to become a district of 17,000 residents stretching from Länsiväylä to the seashore. The center of Finnoo is being built above the metro station, and with this contract, the station will gain accessible access routes from both Meritienaukio and Ridarinreitti.
“The project includes the construction of Meritien between Kaitaantie and Hyljemäenportti, the upper and lower levels of Meritienaukio, the Syväsalmi Bridge, intersections and street sections of Syväsalmensalmi Street and Hyljemäenportti, as well as a section of Lapiarinpolku west of the Syväsalmi Bridge and a section of Ridarinreitti near the Länsimetro metro center,” explains Aapo Lahtinen, CEO of Louhintahiekka. The contract also includes relocating the Djupsundsbäcken stream in the Syväsalmensalmi Forest.
“Most of Syväsalmensalmi Forest is a preserved woodland area where the Djupsundsbäcken urban stream will be moved to its planned location in accordance with the zoning plan. The area’s flood risk has also been considered in the design, and as part of the contract, we will renew the culvert under Havaintopolku,” Lahtinen says.
In addition to street construction, the work includes piling, ground reinforcement, excavation, supported trenches, fills, water supply systems, bridge construction, retaining walls, steel structures, and stonework, landscaping, and asphalt work.
“The project is demanding due to its tight schedule, requiring the site management to ensure high-quality coordination, precise planning, and strict schedule control. The project will also take into account the area's environmental values, such as the nearby Suomenoja bird wetland, trout stream, and local flying squirrel populations. The construction takes place in the middle of a residential center and immediately adjacent to the metro station, which calls for special care and caution,” says Lahtinen.
Work in Finnoo Center began in May, and Louhintahiekka’s portion is scheduled for completion by September 2026
