The project, commissioned by the City of Turku, involves strengthening the eastern riverside quay between Myllysilta Bridge and Teatterisilta Bridge. Its objective is to ensure the long-term safety and functionality of the waterfront structures in the area.
The existing quay structure is part of one of the oldest surviving riverfront retaining wall complexes along the Aura River.
The works include the demolition of the existing quay wall, ground stabilisation measures, and the construction of a new retaining wall structure. The new structure will then be clad with the original stone blocks to preserve the historic character of the area.
“This project combines technically demanding waterfront construction with the special requirements of a culturally and historically significant environment. During the development phase, we worked closely with the client to identify solutions that balance the project’s constructability, schedule, and the preservation of the area’s cultural and historical values,” says Aapo Lahtinen, CEO of Louhintahiekka.
The construction phase has now commenced. The works will be carried out in stages to minimise disruption and ensure that the riverfront area remains accessible and functional throughout the project.
