Näsisaari is a large artificial island in Lake Näsijärvi in Tampere, where we carried out a major waterbody reclamation project. The Tampere tramway currently runs through Näsisaari, and in the future the area will be developed into a residential district known as Järvikaupunki.
Among other works, we transported a total of 1,000,000 cubic metres of blasted rock to the island and to the tramway embankment structures. The project is now continuing with deep ground compaction to prepare the area for future construction. During the spring, the island is compacted using heavy dynamic compaction: a compaction machine drops a weight of over 10 tonnes from a height of up to 10 metres to densify the reclaimed area. In total, approximately 70,000 drops are carried out at 7,600 individual drop points.
Before each compaction phase, the surface layer of the fill is levelled and shaped, including the highest embankment of the island. Any need for additional compaction is determined based on settlement monitoring.
The contract will be completed in June.
