Louhintahiekka carried out the rock excavation contract for the Port of Rauma
Louhintahiekka carried out the rock excavation contract for the Port of Rauma's Seaside Industry Park including the transfer of the blasted rock to Järviluoto in accordance with the master plan and the future development plan. The construction of the road area created readiness for further development in the area.
At the Port of Rauma, a 20-metre-high plot was excavated down to the same level as the harbour area. The excavation contract included excavation, transport and reception of blasted rock for sea filling, as well as dredging and crushing of rock material.
"We excavated a total of 230,000 solid cubic metres of rock (m³) in the harbour area. The blasted rock was transported a couple of kilometres away to the sea filling area, where the seabed was dredged in front of the rock embankment. About 800 metres of 30-metre-wide roadbed was created from the blasted rock. The nesting season of cormorants was also taken into account in the blasted rock transfer, which is why the removal had to be completed by the end of January," said Jani Pullikka, Project Manager of the contract.
There were also old rock tunnels in the excavated area, inside which concrete structures attached to the rock face were demolished.
"The contract was challenging in terms of excavation, as the port area was very busy. In addition, there were gas and oxygen lines in active use in the immediate vicinity. Optimising excavations with vibration limit values played a major role," Pullikka added.
